Europa: European potato market faces lower production amidst adverse weather conditions, says market expert
The European potato market is set to face a significant production decline in 2024, according to the latest report from Harry Campbell, a market researcher at Expana.
The forecast for the 2024 harvest stands at 20.7 million tonnes, marking an 8.8% decrease from the 2023 harvested production.
This estimate is based on preliminary hectarage figures from the North-Western European Potato Growers (NEPG) and August yield data provided by the EU Commission.
Adverse Weather Impacts Potato Yields Across Europe
Campbell highlights the challenging conditions faced by potato growers in the NEPG region, where “unfavourable wet weather conditions and increased disease prevalence have adversely affected potato crop growth and yields.” Despite a projected 4-6% year-over-year increase in potato hectarage for 2024, the weather’s impact has been severe.
The EU Commission has maintained its 2024 harvest yield forecast at 35.1 tonnes per hectare, which is 4.6% lower than the 2023 yield of 36.8 tonnes per hectare and 1% below the five-year average. Belgium and the Netherlands have been the hardest hit, with yield declines of 11% and 6%, respectively, compared to last year. France and Germany are also expected to see yield reductions, down 4% and 2% year-over-year, respectively.
Southern Europe Fares Better Amid High Temperatures
In contrast, potato crops in Spain and Portugal have remained in average condition, thanks to the use of irrigation, despite high temperatures.
Campbell notes that “irrigation has played a crucial role in maintaining crop health in these regions, helping to mitigate the impact of adverse weather conditions.”
Optimism in the market
Despite the lower production forecast, there is optimism in the market regarding potato availability for the 2024/25 market year.
Campbell explains, “Market players report that they expect better potato availability throughout the market year. The generally dry harvest conditions have resulted in potatoes that are in good condition and will be storable throughout the year, unlike the potatoes harvested under wet conditions in 2023.”
The European potato market continues to navigate the complexities of changing weather patterns, with experts like Campbell providing critical insights into how these conditions impact production and market dynamics.
