Canadá: Alberta potato growers cautiously optimistic for 2025
After several years of strong growth, 2025 looks uncertain for potato producers in Alberta.

With 1.5 million tonnes per year, the province has become the country’s largest producer. However, the climate issue remains, as is often the case, the primary concern.
The crops are located in the south, characterized by a dry climate.
"We need as much snow as possible in the Rockies. All of our irrigation depends on the spring melt filling our reservoirs. Right now we’re a little concerned, but it’s too early to panic ," says Terence Hochstein, president of the Alberta Potato Growers Association.
Alison Davies, who lives near Taber, owns North Paddock Farms , a 283-hectare property. She tries to keep a close eye on the forecast.
"We mostly follow the provincial government website, which gives us information on the climate, reservoir levels, and the amount of snow in the mountains. So we remain cautiously optimistic ," she explains.
The year 2024 has been particularly complex for professionals, due to its numerous climatic variations from one period to another.
"At first we were worried about the water level. Then we had a lot of rain, just after planting, before a very hot and dry summer, and then significant rainfall again in September ," says Alison Davies.
