Egipto: High demand for Egyptian French fry potatoes

The Egyptian potato season begins in January and continues until early July. According to several growers surveyed, volumes are high this season, exceeding those of last year, FreshPlaza informs.

This is also confirmed by Hazem Adel Mohamed, CEO of Lehaa Trading & Agricultural Investment. The producer says, “Volumes are up this season, thanks to increased demand. In the varieties used in French fries specifically, the increase in production is clear. Many French fries factories have opened in Egypt and the Middle East, especially in Saudi Arabia, boosting the Egyptian supply.”

“On the production front, we enjoyed good weather for potatoes. Quality, sizes, and yields are all good,” Hazem continues.

“Many processing potato varieties have been chosen this season by growers.” Hazem says, “The most famous is Santana, and there are also the Diamond and Ageria varieties. Another variety tested recently has shown good results, Pallas.”

So far, several markets are showing dynamism according to Hazem: “Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, European markets such as Germany, and East Asian countries, all are showing good demand for French fries potatoes from Egypt.”

Last season, Egypt dominated exports of French fries potatoes to Europe between February and May, a period that witnessed a shortage of potatoes in Europe. Egyptian exports to African markets were boosted as well, including for example the Moroccan market, which opened up to Egyptian potatoes for the first time in 2024.
