Bolivia: "National Potato Festival Betanzos 2025" for May 23 and 24
The "National Potato Festival 2025" is scheduled for the 23rd and 24th of this month in the municipality of Betanzos, in the department of Potosí, with the aim of demonstrating and highlighting the biological diversity of the potato grown in the coun

"The Festival will be a space to demonstrate and highlight the biological diversity of potatoes grown in different ecosystems nationwide, as well as to disseminate scientific and technological innovations among producers, service providers, importers, and other entities dedicated to growing this product," an institutional report states.
The event is supported by the Ministry of Rural Development and Lands (MDRyT) and the Municipal Government of Betanzos. Its objective is to promote increased potato productivity, guarantee food security, and strengthen the industrialization of the tuber.
At the event’s launch this Tuesday in La Paz, Deputy Minister of Agricultural Development Álvaro Mollinedo explained that through the Tubers and Roots program, potato production yields have increased by an average of 7 to 12.6 tons per hectare.
This ensures domestic consumption; however, an average production of 17 tons per hectare is expected. Currently, more than 700 varieties of potatoes are grown nationwide, 110 of which are native.
The mayor of Betanzos, Julio Caba, thanked the national government for its committed work in promoting agricultural development.
Betanzos is the social venue for the "National Potato Festival," designated by Law 476 and held annually. This municipality boasts more than 60 varieties of potatoes and is a major player in agriculture, tourism, and culture.
