Spain: The Agria variety, from Xinzo de Limia, is the Best Potato of the Year
The tasting, held within the framework of the Alimagro Fair in Xinzo de Limia (Ourense), evaluated 6 varieties presented by the Producing Villages

The Agria variety, grown in Xinzo de Limia (Ourense), was the winner of the first edition of the 1st Potato Tasting Competition, held at the Alimagro fair. The competition, organized by the Association of Potato Producing Villages, seeks to recognize and reward the quality of this tuber, a fundamental part of our cuisine.
The jury, composed of industry professionals, along with the active participation of a public jury, evaluated six varieties from different parts of Spain. The Agria potato, with 144.8 points overall, won thanks to its unique texture, flavor, and appearance, standing out above its competitors: Spunta (Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Cádiz), Soprano (Cartagena, Murcia), Donata (Medina del Campo, Valladolid), Kennebec (Coristanco, A Coruña), and Cimega (La Rinconada, Seville).
The victory of the Agria variety highlights the work of farmers in Xinzo de Limia, one of the areas with the longest tradition of potato growing in Spain. The award received at this competition underscores the excellence of local agriculture and the producers’ efforts to preserve this valuable culinary heritage.
Completing the podium of this competition are the Spunta variety, with 138 points, and the Soprano variety, with 121.5 points.
An event that celebrates the richness of the Spanish potato
The 1st Potato Tasting Competition was a showcase of the diversity and quality of potatoes in Spain. The event not only served to recognize the best variety of the year, but also to highlight the richness of the variety that enriches our cuisine.
The organization regrets the absence of varieties from the Canary Islands in this first edition, due to the prohibition on the movement of potatoes within the archipelago for plant health reasons. The Association of Potato Producing Villages hopes that future editions will include the participation of renowned Canary Island varieties.
The event was sponsored by Patatas Meléndez, a leading company in the fresh potato sector in Spain. Based in Medina del Campo (Valladolid), the company has distinguished itself with its focus on quality, technological innovation, and its relationship with farmers. Víctor Carranza, the acclaimed chef from Palencia, led the tasting.
