Brazil: Potatoes lose value in wholesale markets
The price should rise in October
Prices for special agate potatoes this week (September 29 to October 3) averaged R$37 per 25 kg bag at wholesalers in São Paulo (-2%), R$38 per bag in Rio de Janeiro (-4.5%) and R$35 per bag in Belo Horizonte (-11.3%).
These declines are due to the "rainy market": after rising last week as rains slowed the pace of harvesting, prices are now falling again.
In addition, producers in older, warmer regions continue to harvest intensively to prevent excessive loss of tubers’ quality.
The harvest will slow down during October, and prices are expected to rise.
