Algeria (Djelfa): Production of over one million quintals of seasonal potatoes
The wilaya of Djelfa has achieved a production exceeding 1.167 million quintals of seasonal potatoes for the current agricultural campaign.
This potato production, equivalent to that accumulated over several past seasons, is carried out on an area of nearly 3,200 hectares spread across different municipalities, according to the Directorate of Agricultural Services (DSA).
A "record increase"
Potato cultivation in Djelfa, which has generated considerable interest among local farmers, is concentrated in several agricultural areas within the municipalities of Had Shari, El Birine, and Bouiret Lahdab, known for producing various seasonal and non-seasonal varieties. It is worth noting that the yield per hectare of this tuber has seen a record increase thanks to the exchange of expertise with experienced producers from Mascara, Sétif, and Aïn Defla.
Yields have increased from nearly 130 quintals a decade ago to almost 240 quintals over the last three seasons. The planting campaign for early potatoes was recently launched on a targeted area of over 2,100 hectares, which will help ensure sufficient production to meet market demand, according to the same source.
