Spain: Potatoes represent 20% of the economic income in A Limia.
This is confirmed by the study carried out by the USC and the Xinzo de Limia City Council, which highlights that potatoes represent 20% of the income.
The Concello de Xinzo de Limia, in collaboration with the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC), has carried out a study titled "Análise do pataca sector ea its importance in the Limia region", which analyzes the socioeconomic impact of potato cultivation in the region. The results of this research will be presented on Friday, March 27 during the Semente Awards gala.
Preliminary data, presented by the team led by Professor Francisco Jesús Ferreiro Seoane, reveal that the potato sector, including both the industry and related agricultural holdings, generates 22.7% of the revenue from turnover in the region, as indicated in the statements prior to the launch of the report.
The analysis focuses on the most recent fiscal year reviewed, 2023, when turnover reached €65.6 million. Between 2018 and 2023, companies in the sector experienced remarkable growth in revenue of 70.3%, rising from €38.5 million to €65.6 million. This increase is described as "spectacular" and reinforces the position of the A Limia region as a leader in the Galician agri-food sector, consolidating its position as a strategic hub for wealth creation. Furthermore, it is highlighted that the average turnover of these companies is ten times higher than that recorded by other local production sectors.
The report also emphasizes the sector’s financial strength, evidenced by a 113.7% increase in net profits over the past decade, effectively doubling the profit margin during this period. A more detailed presentation will be given this Friday by the USC team, including additional figures and analysis related to employment, the future of irrigation, and the prospects for industrial transformation in the region.
