Mexico: Frost and reduced planting have driven up potato prices in Veracruz.

In recent weeks, the cost of potatoes has experienced a notable increase in the mountainous region of Veracruz, impacting both producers and consumers of this essential product.

Local producers highlighted that one of the main factors behind the recent increase was the low profitability of the crop last year, primarily due to the drastic drop in the price of the product at the farm gate. This situation led many farmers to decide not to plant during the current agricultural cycle.

This situation was compounded by recent frosts that affected areas near the Cofre de Perote, especially in the Perote Valley, causing significant damage to various crops as a result of the low temperatures.

Currently, farmers in communities such as El Llanillo, El Paisano, and Tembladeras plan to begin planting between this week and next, aiming to take advantage of optimal weather conditions for the harvest.

According to producers, a crate of potatoes is currently selling for between 750 and 800 pesos, although they warn that the price could continue to rise to 1,000 pesos, given the shortage and high demand for the product.

This increase is causing concern among merchants and families in the region, as potatoes remain one of the most consumed foods in Veracruz households.
