Rusia: Russian Potato Union: Not enough demand for stored products

Russian potato producers are suffering losses due to the lack of demand for Russian products after long-term storage.

Agrarians note that in recent years they have invested heavily in the construction and equipment of modern potato storage facilities that allow long-term storage of products, but now they face the fact that in the spring, retailers prefer to buy new potatoes, imported from other countries.

To prevent a similar situation in the future, the representatives of the Potato Union proposed, with the participation of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation, to create a platform for discussion and consolidation of information on the volumes, quality and imports. Along with potato producers, representatives of retail chains should also take part in this.

According to Rosstat’s data, at present there are more than 100,000 tons of potatoes in warehouses. These stocks are really direct losses for Russian producers.

Fruitnews.ru describes how in May 2017, the remainder of production amounted to 145,249 tons of potatoes. In May 2018 it was 287,620 tons.
