Alemania: Losses on Saxon potato fields significantly increase prices
This year’s yields of the East German potato fields will be significantly lower than usual.
Due to the drought, the local producers are already expecting losses of around one third, said a spokesman for the agricultural cooperative Langenchursdorf in an interview with the local press. And the failures will also affect the potato prices, it goes on.
At normal temperatures one expects 14 to 15 tubers per plant. However, this number could decrease to 10 due to the continuing drought of this year. The quality of the tuber is, however, not significantly affected. Only the amounts are, which is why there will be significant price increases for some varieties, explains a spokesman for the agricultural cooperative.
Free market
The consequences of the weather are already noticeable for potato packer Friweika eG in nearby Weidensdorf. The company’s management already assumes that the regional companies cannot cover the demand and forecasts shortages of between 30 and 40 percent. The company will buy the missing potatoes on the open market, where price increases of 30 percent could occur.
