Belice: Crisis looms again for the potato industry

Farmers across Belize are at this time harvesting their potatoes. However, some say a crisis is looming ahead.

That is because the market has been saturated with contraband potatoes and local farmers may have to sell their harvest at below average cost.

Deputy Party Leader of the People’s United Party, Jose Aberlardo Mai, revealed that farmers have been offered an estimated 50 cents per pound for potatoes. The initial price was a dollar per pound. In order to compromise, the farmers are willing to sell the potatoes for 85 cents per pound.

And without any agreement yet in place, it is left to be seen if large portions of this year’s harvest will be left to rot as has been the case in the past. Deputy Mai pointed out that in his constituency, about 25 farmers from San Carlos Village will be affected.

However, according to breakingbelizenews.com¸ he pointed out that there are other farmers in northern and western Belize that may also be affected.
