Hungría: Potatoes and onions more expensive due to lack of supply

The potato and onion production in Hungary has fallen significantly short of what was expected last year, and this has had a strong impact on consumer prices.

According to a report from the Agricultural Economics Research Institute (AKI) corresponding to the second week of January, the gross average price at origin of potatoes at the Budapest Wholesale Market stands at 140 HUF per kilo (about 0.44 Euro). A year ago, that same price stood at 80 HUF (0.25 Euro). In the retail market, the kilo of washed, packaged potatoes costs 300 HUF (0.94 Euro).

At present, domestic warehouses are almost empty, as the potato harvest kicked off one month earlier than usual. In Hungary, potatoes are not stored for longer than until early February, since they lose water due to unfavorable storage conditions and the peel becomes stained.

Last year’s harvest was weak not only in Hungary, but also in the EU. Germany is the biggest grower, but this year, dry weather and heat were recorded on the German-Polish plain for months. The consequence of this is that the usual cheap potato dumping in Hungary lagged behind. This is also true for onions, because the foreign production was also smaller. What has been arriving has reached much more expensive prices than usual.

One third of Hungary’s potato production, about 60-80 thousand tons, ends up in retail chains. There are only a few companies in Hungary producing large quantities. Solum, which has 300 hectares, is the largest domestic producer, with a storage capacity of 13,000 tons. This company is able to handle its own production until around February, after which imports become necessary. Like many other Hungarian companies, early summer potatoes are bought from the southern areas, and their own crop is handled from July onwards.

According to data from the HCSO, the country’s potato harvest amounted to three million tons in 1960, but had already been reduced to 780 thousand tons by the beginning of the 2000’s. At present, Hungary’s annual potato production amounts to just around 200,000 tons, which are grown on about 8,000 hectares. According to the Agricultural Economics Research Institute (AKI), the yield per hectare oscillates between 13.4 and 50 tons.
