Europa: Tight stocks and weather challenges impact Irish and European potato markets
The Irish Farmers Association (IFA) has released its latest potato market report, highlighting steady demand and consumption amidst persistent cold and wet weather.
As the new season varieties gradually enter the market, available stocks continue to tighten. This trend is expected to persist for at least another two weeks until more new season Queens are ready for harvest.
The report indicates that some early-planted varieties have experienced yield reductions due to adverse weather conditions post-planting. This situation has led to a cautious market outlook, with stakeholders closely monitoring the availability of new season crops.
European Perspective: Awaiting the New Season Crop
Across Europe, the focus remains on the new season crop and the timeline for sufficient quantities to become available, particularly for processing purposes. Many factories have temporarily closed for maintenance, adding pressure to the market. Belgium, in particular, faces significant challenges as planting was delayed, leading to a tight availability of early processing crops in July. It is anticipated that sufficient volumes will not be available until mid-August.
Despite these challenges, some early “table” varieties are already being harvested. Interestingly, prices have remained stable, mirroring last year’s levels, and have not experienced the usual decline seen at this time of year.
