Lowest potato harvest in eight years in Romania

According to the National Institute of Statistics, Romania had its lowest potato harvest in eight years in 2024.

This is remarkable given Romania’s important role in the European Union’s potato growing sector, where almost a third of the EU’s potato farms are located. Despite this position, Romania’s harvest was significantly lower than the EU average, with an estimated yield of 14.8 tonnes per hectare, compared to 35 tonnes per hectare in the rest of the EU.

The Romanian potato sector is facing several challenges. The cost of seed potatoes has risen sharply, while the availability of affordable labor is becoming an increasingly urgent issue. In addition, the drought and heat in 2024 has severely affected cultivation, further reducing yields. These setbacks come at a time when demand for potatoes in Romania is increasing, increasing reliance on imported potatoes to meet consumer demand. This has affected prices, with a kilo of potatoes typically costing 5 lei (€1) on the market.

The situation is further complicated by broader trends within the EU, where several major growing countries have seen a decline in potato yields, including France, Poland, the Netherlands and Belgium. Poland in particular, a major supplier to the Romanian market, has seen a noticeable decline in production. Between 2000 and 2023, the EU harvested 27.9 million fewer tonnes of potatoes, a decrease of 36.7%. This regional trend highlights the challenges for potato growers, not only in Romania, but across the European Union.
