Colombia: CAR suspends potato crops in Cundinamarca due to affecting water sources

The Regional Autonomous Corporation of Cundinamarca (CAR) ordered the suspension of agricultural activities on three properties in the El Dintel area, after confirming that the use of fungicides and heavy machinery was contaminating water sources.

According to the technical report prepared by the CAR’s Gualivá Regional Directorate, approximately 20 hectares were being exploited with practices that seriously affected the ecosystem. The chemicals used in potato crops were filtering into water sources, putting at risk the quality of the water used by the inhabitants of the area. Among the contaminated sources is the Sabaneta stream, which supplies the Alto del Vino aqueduct and the water system of the municipality of La Vega.

The director of the Gualivá regional office, Gratiniano Suárez, explained that these agricultural activities are prohibited within the Cuchilla El Chuscal Integrated Management District (DMI), a protected area that aims to conserve forest resources and guarantee the sustainability of the ecosystem.

Given the seriousness of the situation, the CAR will implement environmental recovery measures, focused on restoring native vegetation and minimizing the damage caused by agricultural exploitation in this area.  Through the Socio-Environmental Intervention Plan (PISA),  actions such as reforestation with native species and the recovery of impacted water sources will be carried out.

Affected communities have expressed concern about water contamination, as many residents directly depend on these sources for their consumption and daily activities. Environmental leaders have called for stricter monitoring to prevent such incidents from happening again and have called for harsher penalties for those who fail to comply with environmental regulations.

What solutions could be given?

On the other hand, experts have pointed out that the problem is not exclusive to La Vega, since similar cases have been identified in other regions of Cundinamarca where the indiscriminate use of agrochemicals is affecting water ecosystems. This situation has revived the debate on the need to promote sustainable agricultural practices that do not put the natural balance or the health of communities at risk.

The CAR has reiterated its commitment to environmental protection and has urged farmers to adopt responsible farming methods that allow for harmonious coexistence between agricultural production and environmental conservation. The suspension of these crops in La Vega will continue until the recovery of the ecosystem and compliance with current environmental regulations are guaranteed.
