Brazil: McCain invests 1.8 billion reais to expand frozen potato production

McCain Foods has announced plans to expand its production plant in Araxá, Minas Gerais, with an estimated investment of R$1.8 billion (US$317 million), which represents the company’s largest investment in the region to date.

The project includes the addition of a new potato chip production line and a pre-formed product line, which will increase processing capacity in Brazil and improve supply to the domestic market. Operations are expected to begin in the second half of 2027, with the goal of supplying retail, foodservice, and fast-food channels.

Aluizio Periquito Neto, general manager of McCain in Brazil, stated that the country is on track to become the third largest market for frozen french fries worldwide. He added that the expansion will allow the company to strengthen its position and increase its production capacity to meet demand.

The investment will also cover new raw potato storage facilities and the expansion of cold storage for frozen products, with the aim of maintaining a constant supply throughout the year.

McCain estimates that the expansion will create around 350 jobs in Araxá and involve more than 1,000 agricultural supply chain professionals.

The company stated that the project will comply with global operating standards designed to reduce environmental impact. The Araxá plant already operates on 100% renewable energy and has received carbon neutrality certification for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions from BSI.
