Canadá: Late start for P.E.I. potatoes

Cascumpec seed potato grower Jason Rayner is biding his time before moving equipment outdoors to start grading seed stock for customers.

“It is still too muddy and still really too cold, and the snow is going to really control the temperature, too,” Rayner commented.

“In P.E.I., unfortunately, spring is delaying getting here probably more than anywhere,” said P.E.I. Potato Board general manager, Greg Donald. All the snow and wet ground is pushing planting season further and further behind, he noted.“Right now, we must be at least two, or three weeks behind,” Donald commented.

“We’re definitely behind and, how much behind will depend on Mother Nature over the next few weeks,” he said.Donald said there are usually some spuds in the ground before the end of April, especially down east. He’s not expecting any such activity this April.

Donald suggested the planting season is ahead of schedule out west, about normal in Ontario and then behind normal heading east, and most noticeable in P.E.I.In Craig Wallace’s Elmsdale farmyard workers were servicing the farm’s potato planter but Wallace admitted he doesn’t expect to be using the equipment anytime soon.

Rayner said farmers usually try to get their barley in before shifting to potato planting but with all farmers likely to be later than normal getting on the land, he said potato growers might have to delay sowing grain just to give the russet burbanks and other late varieties sufficient growing time.

“One of these days the temperature will change, but I don’t know when that will be,” said Rayner in admitting the grading of seed potatoes and, subsequently, the working of the land, will just have to wait until it does.
