Alemania: Cyprus and Italy rule the German new potato market

Customers on the German wholesale markets were very interested in new potatoes throughout the week of 11-17 May 2015.

This is clearly shown in the BLE market newsletter KW 20/2015 of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food (BLE). Annabelle of Cyprus and Italian Sieglinde were the most traded potato varieties.

Prices for Italian early potatoes increased in contrast to the previous year. So the cost of a kilo of Italian Sieglinde in the week of 11-17 May reached an average of around 0.99 Euro. Last year at the same time they only cost 0.72 Euro per kilo. Due to the continuous demand for new potatoes there were no significant price changes this week.

Supply of German potatoes expected in the next few daysOn the wholesale markets in Frankfurt and Berlin, the prices were temporarily lowered. In Hamburg the first German Annabelle potato arrived. After arrival they became more expensive in an instant. They were in demand nevertheless. In the coming days an enhanced supply of German potatoes is to be expected.Demand dropped, prices riseGerman potatoes continue to influence the market with many native varieties. Despite the marginal decline in demand, the prices were slightly increased. The prices of the German Annabelle variety rose in the week of 11-17 May in 2015 from 0.30 to 0.32 Euro per kilo at the Cologne wholesalers.
