EEUU: USDA deregulates second-generation Simplot Innate potato
USDA has deregulated a Russet Burbank potato from J.R. Simplot’s second-generation Innate line, which utilizes biotechnology.
First-generation Innate spuds include non-browning and reduced-bruising traits, as well as roughly 70 percent less acrylamide, which is a chemical formed when certain foods are fried or baked above 250 degrees. Laboratory testing shows acrylamide could contribute to cancer.
The second generation Burbank awaits completion of Environmental Protection Agency registration and Food and Drug Administration approval before it will enter the marketplace, according to a Simplot press release. In addition to the traits included in the first generation, the latest Innate line will offer resistance to late blight — a highly destructive pathogen that’s widespread in Idaho fields this season — and enhanced cold storage.
“Early research shows that Innate second generation potatoes will further contribute to reducing waste associated with bruise, blight and storage losses by reducing waste at multiple stages of the value chain, including in-field, during storage, processing and in food service,” the press release reads.
