Kenya to host World Potato Congress 2026
The World Potato Congress (WPC) has confirmed that Kenya will host the 2026 edition, a decision reached after reaching an agreement with the Polish Federation, as the event was originally scheduled for Gdansk, Poland.

In March, the congress’ governing board reviewed a request from the National Potato Council of Kenya (NPCK) to reconsider its candidacy for future meetings.
The conference’s objective is to improve food systems, food security, and international trade. Key organizers include the NPCK, the Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA), FreshCrop Limited, and the International Potato Center (CIP). Wachira Kaguongo, WPC International Advisor, stated that global and local potato organizations, supported by corporate sponsors, have secured the necessary resources for the event.
The NPCK, a public-private partnership, coordinates activities along the potato value chain to transform it into a competitive industry. The AFA, under the Ministry of Agriculture, promotes and regulates potato cultivation. Dr. Bruno Linyiru, Director-General of the AFA, highlights Kenya’s leadership in agricultural innovation, supported by policies such as the National Potato Policy (2019) and the National Potato Strategy (2021-2025).
FreshCrop Ltd., led by Chris Gasperi, impacts smallholder farmers in Kenya through a hub-based delivery model. Gasperi highlights its field day model, inspired by WPC events. In 2024, FreshCrop hosted a field day with 8,000 farmers and industry stakeholders, showcasing various software and equipment. CIP Regional Director Dr. Joyce Maru sees the conference as an opportunity to showcase science-based solutions and strengthen collaborations.
The conference is planned to be held between late October and mid-November 2026, to avoid Kenya’s peak tourist season and thus offer reduced hotel rates. Keynote Professional Conference Organizers, with experience from the 2022 Dublin conference, will manage the event. Details on dates, venue, and registration will be available in August 2025. Kenya will be the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to host the conference.
The event is expected to attract more than 1,000 delegates from around the world and will offer workshops, technical visits, and networking opportunities. Kenya’s leadership in potato research and its cultural diversity will provide a warm welcome to the delegates.
