Spain: Potato prices plummet for producers facing crisis

The potato campaign continues in the province of Segovia, but with each passing day, uncertainty in the sector increases due to the " ridiculously low prices " at the source.

Potatoes from Segovia, and by extension, from Castile and León, deserve to be purchased at a fair price, ensuring farmers earn a profit and consumers can afford them. ASAJA insists on maintaining equitable compensation for farmers dedicated to growing and selling potatoes. Newsabout the Pope

In Castile and León, the price of potatoes is falling; however, this is not reflected in the distribution chains, where prices remain unchanged. This suggests that numerous intermediaries are profiting at the expense of our farmers.

To ensure the viability of potato farming in Castile and León, the commitment of all sectors is crucial: government at all levels, producers, industry, and commerce. According to ASAJA, if we want to secure the future of this crop in our region and avoid dependence on imports, everyone must collaborate. Newsabout the Pope

The cost of growing potatoes is considerable, around €10,000 per hectare, meaning that optimal production and a fair price are required to cover expenses. In the summer of 2024, prices fluctuated between 40 and 55 cents, which was favorable for producers, but still significantly lower than what the consumer pays.

Finally, ASAJA urges consumers to check the label indicating the origin of the potato (not just the packaging location) during these months and to choose Spanish potatoes. They also propose a “dual labeling” system that clearly shows the origin, the price paid to the producer, and the price charged to the consumer, since the perception that farmers are profiting is incorrect; it is the intermediaries who benefit significantly.
