Peru (Puno): Local potato shortage in Puno increases prices in the Unión y Dignidad market
Frosts impact potato production, generating demand for imported products

Traders at the Unión y Dignidad market in the city of Puno are facing a shortage of local potatoes due to the recent frosts that have affected production in rural areas of the region. This situation has generated an increase in demand for potatoes from Andahuaylas and Bolivia.
According to one of the market’s traders, potatoes from the area are still not available because the frosts have seriously affected the harvests. The lack of local potatoes has forced vendors to resort to imported products, where the price of an arroba of Bolivian potatoes ranges between 25 and 35 soles.
On the other hand, the prices of Andahuaylas potatoes, such as sica, canchan, huayro, peruanita, blanca and imilla, range between 15 and 20 soles. Potatoes from the area are still very scarce.
Traders hope that in the coming days, local potatoes from the Lago area will return to the market, which could stabilize prices and ease the economic burden for families in Puno.
