Peru: Snowfall hits potato production and other crops in Huamalíes
Heavy snowfall has affected 126 hectares of crops in the province of Huamalíes, causing irreparable losses in potato, olluco and barley crops.

The heavy rains and snowfalls that hit the province of Huamalíes , in the region of Huánuco, have caused serious losses in potato, olluco and barley crops. According to the head of the Agrarian Agency of Huamalíes, Juan Ríos, 126 hectares of agricultural fields have been affected by the inclement weather. Among these, 17 hectares of potatoes have been completely lost, an alarming situation for farmers in the area.
Reactions to the agricultural crisis
Ríos explained that, due to the mudslide in the district of Tantamayo, around 6 hectares of potatoes have been affected by the landslide. Catastrophic agricultural insurance is the main support measure for affected farmers. This insurance, managed by the insurer Rímac Seguros, will assess the losses of agricultural producers in Huamalíes. Ríos stressed that field assessments will be carried out soon so that farmers can benefit from this support.
In addition to crops, the rains have also affected the livestock sector, although with less impact. The Cattle Project has begun its course, offering technical assistance in artificial insemination and health for cattle. Specialists are touring both the left and right banks of the province to help producers in this sector.
Delivery of native potato seeds
In the midst of the crisis, the Native Potato Project continues with 7 specialists in the province of Huamalíes. The project will benefit seven districts in the province, including Tantamayo, Chavín de Pariarca, and Puños. The assistance includes technical training and ongoing follow-up by specialists for each of the benefited producers.
Each locality will receive between 350 and 700 kg of native potato seed as part of the program. Through these actions, the project seeks to strengthen one of the most important production chains for the region.
