Chile: Chiloé promotes efficient potato production
More than 40 producers and technical advisors from the province participated in a field day organized by INIA Butalcura, focused on improving potato crop yields through advanced soil and water management techniques.

Key workshops for more productive potatoes
The activity, part of a technology transfer project, featured INIA experts who addressed essential topics for sustainable production:
Ingrid Martínez (soil specialist) explained how soil physical properties and water availability influence crop yield.
Ana María Méndez (crop physiology) presented technological tools to identify key characteristics in tubers.
Manuel Muñoz (genetic breeder) showed results of new potato varieties in experimental trials.
Technology and genetics to address local challenges
During the event, the use of phenotyping (analysis of plant characteristics) to optimize production, especially under dryland conditions, was highlighted. Muñoz emphasized INIA’s commitment to agricultural development in Chiloé, where potatoes are a key crop.
Next steps: knowledge transfer to the field
Gabriel Peña, event coordinator, praised the high participation and farmers’ interest in adopting new techniques. This knowledge seeks to improve not only productivity but also the sustainability of a crop that is key to the local economy.
