Brazil: Onion prices fall in wholesale markets
Attempts to increase the pace of harvest combined with the arrival of foreign bulbs are detrimental to prices.

Although still green and below ideal size, the volume of onions in Irecê (Bahia) increased slightly this week, due to the attempt by producers in the region to plant early to increase profitability.
Furthermore, there was a supply conflict due to bulbs from Santa Catarina and also imported bulbs that "rose" to the Northeast (these, even though they were of excellent quality), resulting in pressure on prices this week (April 7 to 11) in Bahia. Thus, the price paid for a 20-kilo bag fell 13.40% compared to the last closing price, closing at an average of R$49.50.
It’s worth noting that there are significant concerns regarding the 2025 Irecê harvest, as there has been almost no rainfall this year and water reservoirs are running low. The second half of the year is expected to be even more challenging if this scenario continues until then.
Climatempo even forecasts 60 mm of rain in the next 15 days in Irecê, with 33 mm expected this Saturday alone (12). However, this volume is insufficient to adequately raise the reservoir levels, especially given the extremely high temperatures in the area (which have exceeded 33°C in recent days).
