Peru signed an agreement to guarantee access to fresh potatoes to the Brazilian market.

In accordance with the coordination made, the resolution with the phytosanitary requirements must be published within 30 days.

The chef of the Ministério do Desenvolvimento Agrário e Irrigação (Midagri), Ángel Manero Campos, signed an agreement with vice-ministers of the Brazilian government to advance our efforts to access fresh sweet potatoes to that potential market, which has more than 200 million consumers.

This new access represents an opportunity to divert future sweet potato surpluses to other markets and avoid price cuts for Peruvian farmers.

The chef of Midagri also met with the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply of Brazil, Carlos Fávaro, requesting support to advance our efforts to access morangos and raspberries.

During the event, Minister Manero also mentioned the portfolio of irrigation projects in the country, which will boost the agricultural sector and increase the agricultural area by more than a thousand hectares.

In turn, Minister Fávaro also referred to the potential of the port of Chancay as an entry point for Brazilian products to Asia and wonders if it has been chosen and is in operation. Minister Manero responded that, in fact, the operation was already underway and that it would be in the interest of Peru for Brazilian companies to establish themselves in the special economic zone planned for that location.

Minister Manero took the opportunity to invite his Brazilian counterpart to schedule a visit to Porto de Chancay to see his facilities.

International event

The arrival of Minister Angel Manero to Brazil will take place within the scope of the 18th International Congress of the Latin American Association for the Development of Agricultural Insurance (ALASA), which will be held in Brasilia from April 7 to 10, 2025.

During the event, the Brazilian side expressed interest in the Peruvian agricultural insurance system. In this sense, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MIDAGR) reported that Peru has a 100% subsidized catastrophe insurance, 50% subsidized loans and that it seeks to establish a parametric insurance with a 70% subsidy. They are also interested in Peru’s legal tax, which is currently at 3.5%.
