Chile: INIA warns of the risk of fungal infections in crops between Coquimbo and Los Lagos due to late rains and high temperatures.

The institute notes that crops are advancing rapidly and could affect regional production.

The Agricultural Research Institute ( INIA ) warned that this year’s weather conditions have accelerated  crop development  and could favor the emergence of fungal diseases.

According to its October Agroclimatic Pulse, the early accumulation of cold and high temperatures recorded between Coquimbo and Los Lagos brought forward the phenological stages.

"The very early cold weather and high temperatures favored the phenological stages being ahead of their historical levels," explained Raúl Orrego, INIA researcher and head of the bulletin.

He added that these factors, along with "sporadic rainfall typical of spring, are associated with a high risk of diseases, especially fungal diseases."

Late blight in potatoes

The report warns of high pressure for late blight in potatoes and notes that, although a significant water deficit persists, agricultural activity has not been affected.

"It’s important to see what happens in the coming weeks, as several brief rainfall events are occurring that could sustain activity," Orrego said.

The bulletin, available on the INIA website, compiles information from more than 400 agrometeorological stations to guide agricultural management in response to the country’s climatic variations.
