Argentina: Mendoza experiences explosive growth in the potato sector, exporting more potatoes than grape must (VIDEO)

This boom, driven by key international investment and optimal conditions in the Uco Valley, is forcing a rethinking of the production matrix

The potato export sector in Mendoza has experienced "striking" but "expected" growth. Mario Bustos Carra, president of the Cuyo Foreign Trade Chamber, emphasized that this phenomenon was catalyzed by an international company that decided to invest in the province, acquiring a significant production. This investment has leveraged the advantages offered by Mendoza’s land, especially in the Uco Valley region, which is very well-suited for this crop.

For those who have followed the development of this sector, the figures are not surprising, but rather generate satisfaction, as they confirm the quality of Mendoza’s production and can serve as an incentive for other companies to consider investing in Mendoza.

Industrial potatoes lead exports

Mendoza has the ideal conditions to cultivate two varieties of potatoes: one for regular consumption and one for industrial use. While both adapt perfectly to the province’s climate and soil, statistics show that currently, a larger area is dedicated to industrial potatoes, which are the most exported variety. Processed potatoes are in high demand, especially for the production of potato chips, one of the most consumed foods worldwide, particularly in the Western world.

This recent success suggests the need to rethink Mendoza’s production matrix. Crops like potatoes and garlic appear to be better protected against adverse weather conditions, such as hail, than grapes, olives, plums, or peaches. While extreme weather events can still damage ripe fruit, potatoes represent one of the "good alternatives" for economic development, as does pistachio.

Economic potential and new markets

The consolidation of potatoes as a star export product highlights the untapped economic potential of the province. Only 4% of Mendoza’s total area is currently cultivated. Experts point out that increasing production could significantly boost the economy and wealth of the sectors directly and indirectly involved, generating a substantial "spillover" effect from investments.

Potato production

Currently, in addition to the Brazilian market, Mendoza’s potato production is in demand in several countries, including Paraguay, Colombia, and the United States. Efforts are also underway to enter the Chinese market. This boom not only includes processed potatoes, which adds significant employment, but also opens up opportunities for exporting fresh potatoes for immediate consumption.

Although potatoes were traditionally associated with other regions of the country, Mendoza has always had a very high-quality production, which is now becoming increasingly prominent. This new landscape could lead to greater recognition for Mendoza potatoes in the future, even surpassing the traditionally renowned potatoes of Balcarce.
