Peru (Vinchos-Ayacucho): INIA established demonstration plots for the production of high-quality potato seeds.
The activity was carried out within the framework of the agreement between INIA and PERU LNG.
The National Institute of Agricultural Innovation (INIA) has established 15 demonstration plots for potato cultivation with the Yungay, Capiro, and Peruanita varieties in the district of Vinchos, province of Huamanga, Ayacucho region. This initiative aims to produce seeds with high genetic quality, capable of significantly increasing yield per hectare.
These plots were established by the INIA Canaán Agricultural Experiment Station. Detailed soil analyses were conducted, evaluating acidity levels, pH, the presence of heavy metals, and other parameters related to soil quality. The process involved the active participation of local producers, who will directly benefit from the results.
The seeds produced will have high-value characteristics, allowing farmers to optimize yields per hectare. Furthermore, they will promote soil fertility and produce tubers with high levels of vitamins and antioxidants, ideal for combating disease. The crops will also have an adequate pulp content, suitable for the production of various derivatives.
As part of the project, INIA will provide technical assistance and technology transfer in key areas such as agronomic soil management, production of organic fertilizers (liquid and solid), pest control techniques, weed management, and high-quality seed production. It will also promote good agricultural practices and facilitate training in harvesting and post-harvest processes.
Genetically improved seeds have remarkable advantages, such as their resistance to the main pests that affect crops, an increase in productivity per hectare of more than 50%, a lower dependence on agrochemicals and an outstanding ability to adapt to climate change.
This initiative is being developed within the framework of the agreement established between INIA and PERÚ LNG, and also has the collaboration of the “Calderón” Agricultural Producers Association, the World Food Programme (WFP), the National Agrarian Health Service (Senasa), among other actors committed to strengthening agriculture in the region.
