Spain: Innovation in new varieties is defining the future of the potato sector.

Murcia is positioning itself as an initial driver, while new varieties are trying to stabilize the market.

The potato sector in Spain is currently experiencing a season characterized by strategic decisions and dynamic market dynamics that are testing its stability. In an exercise of collective responsibility, producers have reduced the cultivated area by more than 20%, with the clear objective of aligning supply with demand and preventing market imbalances.

However, this effort faces significant challenges. Despite this, the current season offers reasons for some optimism. For example, the Region of Murcia has significantly advanced its plantings, which will allow it to supply the market between the end of April and May. Meanwhile, Andalusia is supplementing production with a later planting schedule, while forecasts of a mild spring could minimize delays and facilitate an orderly transition between different production areas.

Regarding protected varieties, the outlook is more stable. These varieties, such as Soprano, have established themselves in the market, with sustained demand exceeding available supply. Meijer Ibérica reaffirms its commitment to not increasing current production, seeking to maintain a balance that provides certainty in a historically volatile sector. According to Boceta, protected varieties contribute to stabilizing the market in a context marked by uncertainty.

Among the standout new varieties is Lady Jane, considered a key player for the near future. With excellent properties for both industrial and home frying, this variety has been well received by manufacturers, supermarkets, and farmers. Furthermore, it is presented as a revolutionary innovation thanks to its resistance to downy mildew, high productivity, and innovative genetic origin that reinforces its long-term potential.

Another growing phenomenon is the rise of the "verdete" potato, which stands out for its superior quality compared to traditional storage potatoes. This type of production is not only gaining market share but is also emerging as a lasting trend.

Finally, in the area of imports, challenges and opportunities remain. While the arrival of low-priced French potatoes competes directly with domestic production at the start of the season in May, Israel plays a different role thanks to its higher-cost but also higher-quality culinary production. These imports can serve as a bridge to the arrival of new potatoes from the Campo de Cartagena region, especially in seasons like the current one, where the pressure of low prices from France affects the domestic market.
