Europe: Belarus leads potato consumption.
Belarus leads potato consumption in Europe, with an annual average of 170 kg per person, according to UN data from 2020.
The figures highlight the marked regional differences in potato consumption habits in Europe, with the eastern countries of the continent standing out as the main consumers.
Ukraine ranks second in annual consumption, with an intake of 126 kg per person, followed by Poland and Romania, which each register an average of 100 kg per person per year.
In Northern Europe, relatively high consumption is also observed. Latvia leads with 83 kg per capita, while Finland reaches 63 kg, Estonia 62 kg, and Sweden 57 kg annually.
Western Europe, meanwhile, shows intermediate figures. The Netherlands registers 93 kg per person per year, Belgium has an average of 89 kg, Germany reaches 67 kg, and the United Kingdom reaches 66 kg.
In southern Europe, consumption levels are significantly lower. Spain and Portugal average 58 kg per capita annually, while Italy falls even below that threshold.
Finally, at the lower end are Cyprus, with a consumption of only 15 kg per person per year, followed by Bulgaria with 26 kg and Malta with 28 kg.
These data reaffirm the importance of the potato as a staple food in many European markets, especially in Eastern Europe, where its consumption continues to significantly exceed the continental average.
