Spain (Cartagena): Potato harvesting progresses in the fields of Cartagena amidst mud and with lower yields

Farmers continue harvesting amidst the mud left by the rains two weeks ago. These downpours slowed crop development, but so far have not impacted prices.

With the same flavor as always, although a bit smaller in size, this is the potato that is currently being harvested in the area of Campo de Cartagena, a region that two weeks ago suffered the ravages of an intense downpour that surprised the inhabitants of Los Alcázares and nearby towns.

Farmers are continuing to harvest the crop in fields still covered in mud, although these conditions could change soon due to the high temperatures. The weather is now cooperating, unlike during the storm two weeks ago, when rain and hail halted harvesting and, in some cases, damaged the crop.

Javier León, a local farmer, explains that the torrential rains two weeks ago, with more than 150 liters falling in just two hours, have meant that what promised to be an excellent harvest has only yielded a good one. Although the size of the produce is somewhat smaller, at least the prices haven’t been affected.
