Spain: Late potatoes can still take advantage of high-efficiency potassium.
The tuber that will be harvested in September or October has an essential tool to optimize both the yield and the quality of the product.
The potato harvest has spread to regions like the Duero basin, although on many farms the harvesting process will take place in September and October. For later-harvest potatoes, potassium nutrition is especially important in the final stages of the cycle. During tuber growth, the need for potassium increases significantly, as this nutrient is key for sugar transport, water regulation in the plant, and starch synthesis and accumulation.
Proper nutrition during this period not only influences the final yield, but also important quality parameters such as size, specific weight, uniformity, and suitability for preservation and industry, says Javier Villamayor, from the Research Department of Fertinagro Biotech.
In recent years, soluble fertilizer formulations with high potassium content have gained relevance, which in addition to the main nutrient, include biostimulant compounds such as free amino acids, humic extracts and micronutrients.
