India: Potato stock limits set for wholesalers
In a bid to regulate prices of potato, the Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Department has set limits for stock of the tuber by wholesalers.
Department Minister Surjya Narayan Patro said the potato stock limit has been fixed at 500 quintal for wholesalers in Cuttack and 350 quintal for cities like Bhubaneswar, Brahmapur, Sambalpur, Puri and Rourkela. Wholesalers at other cities would keep 150 quintal potato in stock, he said.
Besides, the department has served a notice to all district Collectors and Supply Inspectors asking them to take action against potato hoarders. In a letter, Department Secretary Vir Vikram Yadav has also asked Collectors to take action against hoarders and unscrupulous traders under provisions of the Essential Commodities Act, 1955.
“Odisha imports potato from West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh. These two States have less production this year, which has led to rise in tuber prices,” Yadav said in the letter.
Supply officials conducted raids in Cuttack, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal and other districts on the day, according to reports.
