Russia: 3 new potato varieties invented for mechanical harvest
Experts at the Ural Institute of Agriculture have introduced three new varieties of potatoes intended for mechanical harvesting. The deputy director of the Institute Alexander Shanin reported this to a TASS reporter on Monday 17 August.

"The weather in the Urals is different from the climate in the southern latitudes, so the potato varieties need to be adapted to the terrain. Our experts were able to introduce three new varieties - "Cupid" , "Bravo" and “Miner". They passed tests conducted over three years.” - he said.
According to Shanin, the new varieties differ slightly in quality to potatoes grown in vegetable plots and allotments. For gardeners the most important indicators are taste and shelf life, while for large manufacturers it is necessary for the root crops to be resistant to mechanical damage. He added that at the institute they are currently testing another two varieties of potatoes. "All the tests are conducted over three years, there are two sorts - Lux" and "Start" - which are currently in the second year of testing," - he said.
