Argentina (Buenos Aires): Festival and production, potatoes and olives are celebrated in the province
The province of Buenos Aires is getting ready to celebrate two of its most iconic products: potatoes and olives.

Magic and tradition surround the celebrations of the National Potato Festival in General Alvarado and the National Olive Festival in Dorrego, bringing the community together to honor the agricultural and cultural wealth of the mountain and sea region.
Potato Festival, a classic near Miramar
In the town of Comandante Nicanor Otamendi, General Alvarado district, 38 kilometers from Mar del Plata, the National Potato Festival is being celebrated, an iconic event in the region.
From Thursday, March 20th to Sunday, March 23rd, the 46th edition of a unique culinary, productive, and cultural experience will take place at the Plaza Belgrano venue. A tribute to those who grow and harvest this characteristic product of the area.
At the same time, the Industrial and Agricultural Expo will take place on main streets, such as San Martín and Plaza Belgrano.
The best Argentine recipes include this noble tuber in various preparations, from classic French fries, tortillas in all their varieties, empanadas, and stews to the essential Russian salad at all Creole barbecues and Christmas tables.
"It’s an achievement for the community, which knew how to take advantage of and open itself to visitors, elevating this festival to a high standard, which continues to grow year after year," emphasized Alejandro Frezzia, the local Secretary of Tourism and Sports.
This festive day, with free admission, features a packed lineup of exhibitions, technical talks, conferences and markets, agro-industrial displays, field days, a potato competition, a gala dance with the election of a queen, a display of Creole skills, a children’s play area, a food court, entrepreneur stands, and special discounts.
When it comes to partying, music is a must. DJ Pipo will perform on Thursday the 20th, along with Un Poco de Ruido and Los Totoras, and on Sunday the 23rd, to round off the night.
How this celebration was born
In 1948, the town held its annual Potato Queen Ball, organized by the Club Círculo Deportivo. That’s where it all began. In 1965, the event was recognized at the provincial level, with the product as its central focus.
"Ultimately, the National Potato Festival is a living expression of Otamendi’s identity, combining history, culture, and tradition," emphasized Federico López, president of the Club and the Círculo Deportivo Association.
