Ecuador (Saraguro): Potato producers strengthen their knowledge with the implementation of a demonstration plot
This initiative seeks to strengthen the technical capabilities of approximately 20 local producers, who actively participated in the planting of an improved variety that promises a significant increase in productivity.
With the aim of increasing production efficiency and fostering innovation in knowledge transfer, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), in conjunction with the National Institute of Agricultural Research (INIAP), the Political Leadership, the Decentralized Autonomous Government (GAD) of the Parish, and producers from the Jaratenta community, implemented a demonstration plot for growing potatoes of the new INIAP-CAÑARI variety in the parish of San Pablo de Tenta, Saraguro canton.
This initiative seeks to strengthen the technical capabilities of approximately 20 local producers, who actively participated in the planting of this improved variety, which promises a significant increase in tuber productivity and quality.
Coordination with INIAP enabled the delivery of certified seed, while MAG technicians provided technical assistance and training on best agricultural practices to ensure successful production.
Carlos Barros, a MAG technician, highlighted the importance of this activity. “The collaborative work between producers and the entities involved has been key to the success of this demonstration plot. Through training and ongoing support, we have managed not only to improve potato productivity but also to strengthen farmers’ knowledge about the proper management of this new variety,” he said.
