Brazil: Paraná expects 20% increase in potato production

Second crop potatoes should reach 342.6 thousand tons in Paraná

The Department of Rural Economy (Deral) released, last Thursday (13), the Weekly Agricultural Situation Bulletin, which brought information on potato cultivation in the second harvest in Paraná. For the 2024/2025 harvest, the state will cultivate an area of 10.9 thousand hectares, with production estimated at 342.6 thousand tons, which represents an increase of 20% compared to the previous harvest, when production was 286 thousand tons. Productivity is also expected to increase, going from 27.5 tons per hectare in the 2023/2024 harvest to 31.3 tons per hectare in the current harvest.

The planting of the second crop of potatoes in Paraná preferably occurs from December onwards, with the harvest starting in March and usually extending until October. Currently, 87% of the planned area has already been planted, and 7% of the surface, equivalent to 621 hectares, has already been harvested, mainly in the Guarapuava region. The Guarapuava Regional Center (NR) leads with 37.9% of the planted area, followed by Ponta Grossa (17.4%) and Curitiba (15.9%), which together represent 71.2% of the total cultivated area in the state. The remaining areas are distributed among six other regional centers.

Regarding field crops, which total 9.5 thousand hectares, 94% of them show good performance in the stands. Of this total, 14% are in the germination phase, 54% in vegetative development, 20% in tuberization and 12% are in the maturation phase. The areas to be planted are located in the north of the state, in regions such as Campo Mourão and Cornélio Procópio.
