Silicon in potatoes: a strategy to improve yield and sustainability
Silicon is gaining importance in potato production due to its ability to strengthen plant structure, improve plant resistance, and optimize crop yield. However, its absorption is often challenging, as in its natural form, it is not easily assimilated by plant tissues.
In recent years, new technologies have made it possible to develop solutions that facilitate plant assimilation of silicon, improving its defense capacity and tolerance to stress. "Incorporating these types of tools helps us produce more sustainably, reducing the need for pesticides and increasing crop quality ," explains Federico Sassano, Product Manager of Nutrition and Biostimulants at Brometan.
Helping plants help themselves
"We took our experience with indoor crops and applied it to potato cultivation in the field with Armurox. The first trial was in Uruguay, with very good results in disease control and yield. We then replicated the experience in southeastern Argentina, on a McCain plot, where we also achieved excellent results. The most interesting thing was seeing how the product’s eliciting effect makes the plant less attractive to certain pests, reducing their impact on the crop ," explains Carlos Tajan, Head of Potato Cultivation for Argentina and Uruguay.
"Year after year, we confirm that this is the way forward. We’ve spent decades combating problems with synthetic chemical products without eradicating them. Now we realize that the key lies in strengthening plants’ own defense capacity and producing more sustainably ," Tajan adds.
Armurox, an innovative solution
Armurox is a formulation that combines bioassimilable silicon with amino acids and nitrogen, allowing for rapid absorption and translocation within the plant. Its use in potatoes has demonstrated not only improvements in crop health and yield, but also in its natural resistance to pests such as aphids and thrips.
Key benefits
✅ Less chemical waste and less use of phytosanitary products ( EIQ ).
✅ Higher quality sugars, starches and vitamins.
✅ Stronger skin and longer shelf life of potatoes.
✅ Uniform harvest and higher profitability.
"Today we can strengthen plants from within, achieving healthier and more productive crops in a sustainable way ," Sassano concludes.
