French potato trade optimistic

The fresh market for potatoes has so far shown "a predominantly positive development", the French interprofessional potato committee CNIPT reports in a press release.

Yields have increased and exports are going well, but towards the end of the season there are "a number of points to keep a close eye on". Nevertheless, the sector is optimistic about the rest of the season. "The market fundamentals are solid, which gives confidence for the coming weeks."

The autumn 2024 potato harvest saw a significant increase: in France, 12.2% more was harvested than a year earlier – good for more than 800,000 tonnes extra, intended for both the fresh market and the processing industry. This growth is mainly due to an expansion of the area. The yield per hectare remained approximately the same. Due to this increase, the stocks of potatoes for the fresh market were around 470,000 tonnes higher at the end of January 2025 than in the same period last year. At the same time, the volume of potatoes secured through contracts has increased, as a result of which the supply on the free market has only increased by around 382,000 tonnes.

Domestic consumption remains stable, while consumer prices have remained virtually unchanged. In terms of exports, France is once again confirming its leading position as a global player. Up to the end of January 2025, exports have increased by 13% – accounting for almost 1.4 million tonnes of exported potatoes. Despite a slightly more reserved Italian market and the usual slowdown in February, foreign demand remains strong. The hope is that this trend will continue for the rest of the season.
