Brazil: Potato prices are falling as the harvest increases and productivity recovers.
Prices are expected to fall further in the coming weeks.
This week, from July 6 to 10, wholesale prices for Ágata specialty potatoes averaged R$ 91.03 per 25 kg sack in São Paulo, a decrease of 10.6%. In Rio de Janeiro, the price was R$ 83.21 per sack (-19.4%), and in Belo Horizonte it reached R$ 78.88 per sack (-17.2%).
The price reduction in all wholesale markets is due to increased supply, resulting from improved productivity in various producing areas and a more intensive harvest. Additionally, sales were noticeably weaker, possibly due to the school holiday period.
In São Paulo, the potatoes sold come mainly from Vargem Grande do Sul, although most still arrive from Paraná, the Triângulo Mineiro, southern Minas Gerais, and Rio Grande do Sul. A similar situation exists in Rio de Janeiro. In Belo Horizonte, potatoes arrive mostly from Cristalina (GO), southwestern São Paulo, and Bahia, in addition to Vargem Grande do Sul.
The overall quality of the potatoes is good. Prices are expected to continue falling in the coming weeks as the harvest is anticipated to intensify further and productivity continues to recover.
