Spain (Castile and León): Alternaria spreads while the beetle population decreases in potato crops
The moth continues its peak flight period in Segovia and on the border between the provinces of Ávila and Valladolid
The Potato Crop Health Bulletin for Castile and León, prepared by the interprofessional organization Oipacyl in conjunction with the Castile and León Agrarian Technological Institute (Itacyl) and the company FMC Agricultural Solutions, indicates a significant advance in the planting compared to previous years. It also emphasizes the importance of remaining vigilant against potential pests and diseases.
Javier Blázquez, FMC’s Business Development Manager, reports that the potato moth is in full flight in Segovia (especially in areas like Fuente de Santa Cruz) and between the provinces of Ávila and Valladolid.
If traps are unavailable, the bulletin authors suggest applying treatments as soon as adults are detected. They also advise visually inspecting vegetation and tubers for symptoms, especially as harvest approaches, and checking the condition of the tubers after harvesting.
Meanwhile, alternaria has been increasing in recent weeks, approaching levels that require treatment in an area stretching from northeast Salamanca to Campaspero, in eastern Valladolid.
The affected region could include several municipalities in the provinces of Salamanca, Segovia and Ávila.
On the other hand, the potato beetle seems to have a slightly lower incidence, although a high level of presence has been detected in the municipality of Santiuste de San Juan Bautista, in the Segovian countryside.
