Sudáfrica: S. African potatoes too pricey for the poor
As inflation in South Africa has risen to 7 percent, consumers are feeling the pinch, having noticed a sharp increase in the price of basic food staples.

Now, the cost of potatoes has pushed the vegetable out of reach for the poorest of the poor, with the ongoing drought causing their price to shoot up.
Between December 2015 and January 2016, the market sold 1.9 million bags fewer than it usually would during this period.
The low stock levels are responsible for the sharp increase in market prices since November last year.
The current fresh produce market price runs between R60 and R100, depending on the grade.
In 2009, volumes went down by 8 percent and prices increased by 53 percent.
Potatoes SA is warning that trend is likely to continue this year.
