Canadá: New potato varieties enter Ontario fray

Ontario potato growers are moving into the specialty market with new varieties.“We’re finding the commodity potato mentality is starting to die off,” said Derek Blain, vice president of sales and operations for Grand Bend Produce, Grand Bend, Ontario

“The consumer palate for potatoes is getting more sophisticated,” Blain said.

“When you can grow a variety people like, you’re not at the mercy of some chip-stock guy who’s got 20 loads he wants to dump on the market.”

Along with its minis, fingerlings and colored potatoes, Grand Bend grows Annabelle, a versatile yellow-fleshed European variety packed exclusively for Sobeys in poly bags.

“We’ve got people who will only buy Annabelle potatoes,” said Blain, who grows the medium-sized spud in Ontario in summer and California in winter.

This year, Blain is excited about his blue South American varieties, which include long, oval Blue Steele.

“The past five years have seen a big move to more color on the plate, and the antioxidants in blue potatoes are through the roof,” he said.

With his crop in the ground, Blain said Grand Bend is working on packaging design.

“If we don’t end up packing a 3-pound bag of blues this year, we can kill the plant early and put them in our medley pack of minis,” he said.

Blain also exports blue potatoes to the U.S. for potato chips, and said he exported more fingerlings to big U.S. retailers this year than previous years.

Jack Streef, president of Streef Produce in Princeton, Ontario, is pleased with his new white Whitney variety, which has good shelf life, and yellow-fleshed Colomba, more moist than Yukon Gold with good flavor.

“We grew them last year as a test, and customers liked them so we’ve upped the acreage,” Streef said.

A trip to Peru in 2013 opened Trevor Downey’s eyes to the thousands of potato varieties available and inspired him to bring a few to Canada for trial.

Downey, a fourth generation grower and president of Downey Potato Farms in Shelburne, Ontario, now grows and markets several new varieties, including pink-tinged, white-fleshed Strawberry Blonde through Loblaws’ President’s Choice brand.

He also grows purple and gold Masquerade in Ontario, a yellow-fleshed variety ideal for baking or roasting, with plans for commercial release in 2017.

“We’re trying to give consumers more flavor profiles so they can have a better eating experience and feel they get what they’re paying for,” Downey said.
