India: Potato prices plummet
The demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes is continuing to cause problems for those involved in India’s fruit and vegetable sector.

Potato farmers are suffering a major crisis as varieties of the tuber which were selling at Rs 700 per 50kg packet before the currency ban, now sell for less than Rs 300 and still don’t find buyers. Potato is a major crop in the Uttar Pradesh district, cultivated on more than 72,000 hectares. The steepest fall has occurred in prices of Kiri and Gulla varieties.
Before November 9, these were selling at Rs 500 per packet, which within two weeks has fallen to a mere Rs 60-80. Looming over the farmers is yet another problem. November 30 is the last date for them to take their produce out of cold storage. Currently there are 240 cold storage facilities in Agra district alone, which still have more than 10 million packets of produce.
