EEUU: Businesses react to national French fry shortage
Colder weather and frost have caused damage to potato yields which is now threatening the availability of French fries.
In prime potato growing states such as Idaho and North Dakota, the cold frost stunted long potatoes which are the kind that is preferred for making French fries.
The US Department of Agriculture predicted back in November that the production of potatoes in the US would drop this year. 18 percent of potato harvests had to be abandoned this year, according to the United Potato Growers of Canada.
Inventory is expected to go down and prices are expected to increase nationwide but local businesses haven’t seen any effects yet. The general manager of Burger Stand says she is aware of the national problem but they haven’t seen any of effects yet: "We’ll see what happens, the most important thing to us is to always make sure the quality is where we expect it to be so if we have to change products and suppliers, we’ll make it."
