Italia: Record-sales in December for the PGI Potatoes from Sila
The PGI potato from Sila registered a record monthly turnover in December 2020, compared to the sales of the traditional product. The festive period has increased, as usual, consumption and demand.
"Volumes are up and prices are satisfactory. December, in particular, was a very profitable month for us. From here on, the outlook is optimistic. The premium products, which are direct competitors of the PGI potato from Sila, should soon run out of stock. And that could translate into a greater slice available for our product. We expect to have a second phase of the campaign that is less worrisome than the first one."
This analysis was provided by Albino Carli, director of the potato consortium, Consorzio Produttori Patate Associati (PPAS). "At the beginning of the campaign, we planned to increase the cultivation areas by about 30%. Although our stocks should be enough to reach the end of May 2021, the sales volume so far has been much higher than expected. More than likely, we will arrive in May with proper destocking and it could end a few weeks earlier," added Carli.
January, February and March are typically the months of greatest potato consumption. "In addition to product quality, nowadays consumers are also looking at other aspects, such as those related to eco-sustainability. The visual impact of these products on the shelves becomes even more evident, especially in the large-scale retail trade. In times of pandemic, in fact, large-scale retail has been the only channel that has continued to function and has increased fruit and vegetable sales."
"The fact that we have always chosen this channel as the main one for our PGI potatoes is now rewarding us. Had we focused on markets and the Ho.re.ca sector, we would be telling a different story," admitted Carli.
"In March 2020 the total uncertainty about what was going to happen next, prompted people to hoarding, creating an illusory market hype. As the dynamics of supply in the supermarkets became clearer, and almost a year later, the situation has definitely settled down," concluded the director of the PPAS Consortium when drawing a comparison with last year and the total lockdown phase.
