India: Indian gov. to liquidate potato buffer stock
The State Government has directed the Odisha State Civil Supplies Corporation (OSCSC) to clear out the buffer stock of potato before the arrival of the new potato crops in the market.
The decision to liquidate the buffer stock was made by Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Department after stabilisation of prices of potato in the retail market following the withdrawal of the nationwide strike by transporters in the first week of October.The price of potato on the retail market is ’Rs10 per kilo as there has been a steady supply from West Bengal.
There is a possibility of further price reduction after the new crop arrives on markets in December.The Corporation has been asked to liquidate the potato stock at Patia cold storage in the retail markets of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation and the stock at Jagatpur in Cuttack Municipal Corporation area.
The State Government had maintained a buffer stock of about 400 metric tonnes as against its plan to keep a stock of 29,000 metric tonnes for the current year. The Government had set a target to keep a buffer stock of around 40,000 metric tonnes with budgetary support of ’Rs500,000,000.
