Australia: AU court rules against Spud King
Tony Galati, owner of Spudshed, has had an ongoing fight with the Potato Marketing Corporation, over the supply of potatoes, and may be facing jail, however, the Spud King was giving away free potatoes on Thursday, to promote his new Morley store.
The Supreme Court on Wednesday handed down an injunction intended to limit production on his farms in the South West.“We are in 2015. My own shops.” Mr Galati said. “I am allowed to grow spuds and export them to the South East Asian market, but not in my own Spud Shed. That is ridiculous. It’s an embarrassment. They have kept this (Potato Marketing Corporation) for a long time. It should have been deregulated 20 years ago,” he said.Labor leader Mark McGowan said the injunction against Mr Galati should be withdrawn.
“Let the man grow potatoes.” he said.On Thursday it was back to business for WA’s “Spud King’’, who was giving away free potatoes to mark the opening of his new Morley store, where hundreds of customers backed the maverick grower.An estimated 1000 people turned up at the new Spud Shed warehouse in Morley, where they were given 1kg of free potatoes with their purchase.Gelati says he is not afraid to go to jail and said “They won the injunction but believe me they are not going to stop us. We are going to grow spuds and sell them.”
